The Art
Created on 5/31/18, this gorgeous painting puts Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive on display in all their glory. Pike needed to explore what they thought was the Red River headwaters. It was actually the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Pike, Mountjoy and Miller traveled by horseback upriver and the other 14 men moved downriver hunting for food.

The Artist
Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.
The Setting
The setting of this painting is on the upper Arkansas River to the east of the two tallest Colorado mountains Mt. Elbert (14,439′ center) and Mt. Massive (14,429′ right) which tower over a mile above them.
Pike’s Journal – 21st December, Sunday. from Buena Vista, CO- we separated. “..Myself and the two men … ascended a 12 miles and then encamped on the north side, the river continuing close to the north mountain and running through a narrow rocky channel and in some places not more than 20 feet wide and at least 10 feet deep. Its banks bordered by yellow pine, cedars, &c. 22nd of December, Monday.- Marched up 13 miles, to a large point of the mountain from whence we could view at least 35 miles, to where the river entered the mountains, it being at that place not more than 10 or 15 feet wide, and properly speaking, only a brook; from this place after taking the course, and estimating the distance we returned to our camp of the last evening. Killed one turkey and a hare.”
