Created on 3/17/17, this vibrant painting of the Royal Gorge, captures exactly “what Pike saw” as he looked west with Pike’s Gulch to the right. This is the image selected for one of our t-shirts, which reads, in part, “I stood where Zebulon Pike stood.” We have, and it looks just like this.

The Artist
Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.
The Setting
On January 4 1807, the day before Pike’s 28th birthday, he writes, “I marched about 5 miles on the river, with immense cliffs on both sides… discovered a narrow ravine as water had run down it and frozen hard, it was one continuous sheet of ice. We ascended it with utmost difficulty and danger, loaded with the baggage” with 70 pounds each on their back. Many of Pike’s men did not enter the Royal Gorge but traveled around it with packs and injured horses only to find themselves back in Cañon City.
