The Art
Created on 4/20/17, this dramatic painting of Pike, climbing the very steep incline of Royal Gorge, captures him on the north rim of the gorge. It is hard to believe that they were able to accomplish this climb without any climbing gear. Did you ride the incline at Pike’s Gulch, prior to its destruction by fire on June 11, 2013? If so, you have an appreciation of the severity of the incline. Pike’s Gulch is just west of the current-day Royal Gorge Bridge.

The Artist
Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.
The Setting
It was January 4th, 1807. One day before Pike’s 28th birthday. Zebulon Pike had descended down the Arkansas River about 3 miles into the Royal Gorge (Cañon City, CO.) Unable to progress further downstream he climbed out of the canyon nearly 1000 feet to the North rim.
