The Art
Created on 10/31/18, this painting reflects an important moment in US history. The British Northwest Trading Company on Leech Lake, Minnesota, Cass Lake (then believed to be the Mississippi headwaters), and elsewhere in Minnesota and Wisconsin, had been trading with the Indians for years in Northern Minnesota. The 1803 Louisiana Purchase put an end to that. Since they were now on US soil they were required to pay a tariff. Here you see Pike’s men, and others, shooting down the British Union Jack flying over the British Northwest Trading Companies’ fort on Leech Lake, Minnesota. Pike is standing with his British counterpart holding the American flag to replace the Union Jack.

The Artist
Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.
The Setting
Pike had orders to inform the British to stop flying the British Union Jack over their establishments, stop handing out British metals to the Indians to the disadvantage of American traders, and the pay the required tariffs. He did so, and their response was very positive.
