The Art

Created on 2/5/17, this painting is a dramatic, and patriotic, depiction of the sacrificial death of Zebulon Pike, after his hard fought victory, at York.

Pike was an obedient, faithful servant of the founding fathers of United States from his birth on January 5, 1779 to his death, at this battle, on April 27, 1813.

Canadians consider Pike to be a hero, erecting three monuments, remembering Pike’s victory. One at the landing site (installed 2013), and two at Fort York in Toronto (installed earlier).

The Artist

Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.

The Setting

The Battle of York (Toronto) April 27, 1813 - The War of 1812

“I embark tomorrow in the fleet at Sackett’s Harbor at the head of a column of 1500 choice troops, on a secret expedition - if success attends my steps honor and glory await my name - if defeat, still shall it be said we died like brave men; and conferred honor, even in death, on the American name.” Brigadier General Zebulon Montgomery Pike

Pike and his men won this battle. However, the British ordinance depot blew up and a block, flying through the air, struck Pike in the back as he rested after the victory. He died on a ship on Lake Ontario returning to Sackett’s Harbor (NY).
