Description
4th January, 1807, Sunday - Pike is shown standing beside Pike’s Gulch (on the North rim of the Royal Gorge, CO.) above the Arkansas River. He had climbed 995 feet up this almost vertical gulch with a 70 pound pack slipping and sliding on the ice.
The Royal Gorge Bridge is to the left of this painting. The incline which was destroyed by fire on June 11, 2013 brought people from the North rim down to the Arkansas River in this gulch.
