Description

General Pike was that young 20-year-old when he joined United States Army. He was following in his father’s footsteps. He was assigned by Jeffersons Head of the US Army to explore the eastern and southwestern boundaries of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Pike and his men suffered many hardships in snows, with the lack of food and proper clothing as well as frostbite. On the Mississippi expedition (1805-6) they had to fight the current, winds and rapids. The Mississippi had no dams in 1805 and many continuous rapids had to before going upstream. On the second expedition to American Southwest they ran into low temperatures and snow in the Rocky Mountains.

Pike and his men explored areas which would become the states of Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, in Minnesota.
