Created on 3/3/18, the rich colors in this painting invite you to join Pike around the campfire, at the Cañon City Stockade, while he makes some important decision, during his second expedition.

The Artist
Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.
The Setting
Captain Pike (he had been promoted while on this, his 2nd, expedition) built a stockade on the Arkansas River at the mouth of today’s Royal Gorge on the West side of Cañon City. This stockade was built and used by Pike’s men from December 5-9, 1806 and December 31 – January 14, 1807. Pike’s interpreter, Baroney (Baronet Vasquez), and Patrick Smith kept the group’s cache here from January 15th to the end of February keeping watch over items left behind by the group on the 14th, including all the horses. They left on December 10th heading north and returned from the west on the 31st. They left headed south up Grape Creek, into the Wet Mountain Valley, the Sangre de Christo Mountains, and the Sand Dunes, on January 15.
