The Art

Created on 12/6/17, this beautiful painting shows Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, Dr. John Robinson, Pvt. Theodore Miller and Pvt. John Brown, descending the south ridge of Mount Rosa with Pikes Peak looming over them. Pike shown at the top of the group using his spy glass to view the illusive peak. This painting was selected for one of our full color t-shirts.

The Artist

Ed French is a retired Disney artist, who has brought his enormous talent to depict extraordinary moments in American history, through the eyes of Zebulon Pike.

The Setting

On November 24th 1806, Army Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, Dr. John Robinson, Theodore Miller and John Brown left the Pueblo, CO stockade, to attempt to climb Pike’s “Grand Mountain”, now called Pikes Peak. They were about to gain an appreciation for the Colorado Rockies. After riding north, just west of Fountain Creek, on the 26th, they climbed northwest on the hills above Little Fountain Creek, to reach the summit of 11,499’ Mount Rosa. This was a climb up of 4,999’ on that day. They could see Pike’s Peak from Mt. Rosa 13 miles away and half a mile above them. By November 27^th, they realized they could not reach the summit of El Capitan (the Spanish name) in deep snow, bitter cold (below freezing), wearing inadequate clothing, and hungry (not having eaten in 2 to 3 days.) They turned around, following Little Fountain Creek down, and returned to the Pueblo stockade on November 29.
