“At 2 o’clock in the afternoon I thought I could distinguish a mountain to our right, which appeared like a small blue cloud …” Pike Journal

Pike called the mountain “The Grand Mountain” and here the Small Blue Cloud. The Spanish called it El Capitan and Native Americans revered the peak. “Pikes Peak or Bust” was painted on the wagons of pioneers approaching it from the eastern plains. The group was 173 miles from the Small Blue Cloud on the Arkansas in Las Animas, CO.

Four members would later attempt to summit.
